Stop Guessing Your Training Zones

The Value of VO2 Max Testing for Runners and Triathletes

The running season is upon us, and we know the runners, marathoners, and triathletes in our community are busy prepping for their races. You’re probably already focusing on the basics, like pace, mileage, and heart rate. But without accurate physiological data, it is easy to train too hard or too easy, potentially leaving you stuck on a plateau for weeks.

That’s where VO2 max testing at Peak To Shore Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine comes in. It measures how efficiently your body uses oxygen during exercise and helps identify the training intensities that improve endurance, speed, and recovery.

For endurance athletes looking to train with precision, that information can make a major difference.

VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. It reflects how effectively your heart, lungs, and muscles work together to produce energy. The higher your VO2 max, the greater your aerobic capacity.

VO2 max testing analyzes several metrics, including oxygen consumption, breathing rate, and heart rate response. This information helps us determine your:

  • Aerobic thresholds
  • Lactate thresholds
  • Recovery efficiency
  • Training zones
  • Endurance potential

We can then use this information to develop a precise, personalized training program designed to help you hit your performance goals.

Many athletes, even those who develop a detailed training program, will find themselves stuck in a place where workouts feel hard, but they don’t seem to be improving. It can be difficult to know what you need to change to see results.

VO2 max testing removes guesswork by providing data specific to your physiology. And that offers a wide range of benefits.

Accurate training zones help you target the right intensity for each workout so you can improve aerobic endurance, increase speed, and recover more effectively between sessions.

For runners, this can lead to improved running economy and more sustainable long-distance performance. For triathletes, precise training can help balance the demands of swimming, cycling, and running without overtraining.

VO2 max testing can also reveal where performance breakdowns occur. For example, some athletes have strong aerobic fitness but poor threshold tolerance. Other athletes slow down early because their bodies cannot clear metabolic waste quickly when they pick up the pace.

Finding your exact tipping point helps us train your body to clear this waste, keeping your muscles fresh for longer distances. Our team can help you interpret your VO2 max testing results and develop a training plan tailored to your performance needs.

Overtraining is common in endurance sports, leading to symptoms like persistent fatigue, reduced performance, and increased injury risk. VO2 max testing helps you avoid these concerns.

By identifying appropriate heart rate and effort zones, you can distribute intensity more effectively throughout the week, leading to better recovery and sustainable long-term progress.

Many athletes expect VO2 max testing to involve bulky equipment or stationary machines. We take a more functional approach, however. Because the system doesn’t require tubing, we can perform the tests in real training environments. Depending on your goals, this might happen:

  • On a treadmill
  • In the pool
  • While cycling

This generates more sport-specific data and allows us to assess performance under conditions that closely match competition demands.

During testing, you’ll wear a lightweight mask that measures exactly how much oxygen your body takes in and how much carbon dioxide you breathe out, showing us your real-time energy burn as you gradually increase your exercise intensity.  Our team closely monitors the process to ensure safety and accuracy.

Following the assessment, you’ll receive a wealth of valuable feedback, including:

  • VO2 max score
  • Aerobic and anaerobic thresholds
  • Heart rate training zones
  • Recovery recommendations
  • Performance insights
  • Training guidance

We then work with you to integrate this data into a personalized training plan.

“I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Andrew at Peak to Shore. I’ve been dealing with chronic lower back pain following a hip replacement, and Andrew was highly recommended by a friend. I’m extremely happy with his treatments — he is knowledgeable, skilled, and consistently thorough in his approach. His dry needling therapy has been especially helpful, and I can finally feel steady progress. It’s reassuring to know we’re moving in the right direction. The clinic itself is also great — the receptionist is welcoming and the service is always efficient.”
