Get Ready for Summer Sports at Peak To Shore Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine
Summer is right around the corner, which means longer days, outdoor practices, and a full weekend schedule. But with more activity comes greater physical demand. No matter what sport you’re playing, your muscles, joints, and connective tissues need to be able to handle the stress.
At Peak To Shore Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine, movement screens and return-to-sport testing help athletes prepare their bodies before the season begins. These assessments identify movement problems, strength gaps, and balance issues that can increase injury risk. With the right plan, you can enter the season stronger and more confident.

Why Preparation Matters Before the Season Starts
Many injuries occur early in the season, when the body isn’t quite ready for the sudden increase in activity. Popular summer sports like soccer, rugby, volleyball, and hockey all require difficult skills, such as sudden direction changes and rapid acceleration. A preseason assessment helps identify potential problems before they lead to pain or injury.
At Peak To Shore Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine, we offer a couple of options to suit your needs.
Movement Screens: Identifying Weak Links
One such option is a movement screen that evaluates how the body moves during basic athletic tasks, including squatting, lunging, balancing, and reaching. Our physiotherapists look for movement patterns that may place stress on the body so we can help you correct them before they become a problem.
Some common issues we see include:
- Limited hip mobility
- Poor balance or coordination
- Weak glute muscles
- Knee collapse during squats or jumps
- Core weakness affecting posture and control
Once we’ve identified the issue, we’ll create a customized plan to address it directly.
Support Tailored To Your Specific Needs
At Peak To Shore Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine, we help people of all ages and athletic interests get ready for the summer sports season.
Age-Specific Care
We know that adult recreational athletes often balance sport with work, family life, and limited training time. Reduced mobility, muscle weakness from sedentary work, and overuse injuries from repetitive activity can also pose challenges.
However, kids have unique needs as well. Namely, their bones can grow quickly, while muscles and tendons may take longer to adapt. This imbalance can lead to issues such as knee or heel pain or muscle strain.
In both cases, we’ll perform a detailed assessment and create a care plan that works for you and your chosen sport.
Sports-Specific Care
If you play sports like soccer, rugby, or hockey, we might focus on:
- Sprint mechanics
- Lower-body strength
- Balance and agility training
- Proper warm-up routines
However, if you’re a cyclist, your needs are a little different. In that case, you might benefit from:
- A custom bike fitting
- Hip and glute strengthening
- Core stabilization exercises
- Posture correction for neck and back comfort

Evidence-Based Treatment Strategies
As we create your custom care plan, we pull from a range of different treatment techniques, including the following:
Strength Training
Stronger muscles reduce stress on joints during high-impact sports, and targeted strengthening improves joint stability and muscle endurance.
Neuromuscular Training
This type of training improves coordination between the brain and muscles, helping athletes control their bodies during fast movements.
Mobility Work
Limited mobility can change how the body moves, and improving the range of motion allows for smoother, safer patterns. Treatment might include targeted stretches or soft tissue therapy.
Gradual Load Progression
The body adapts best when activity increases gradually. We can help you safely build your training volume to avoid sudden spikes in tissue stress that can lead to injury.
