Overcoming Hip Pain: Find Relief and Resume Your Active Lifestyle

Do you experience pain in your hips while enjoying leisurely walks, climbing stairs, or bending down? Hip pain can significantly limit your ability to perform and enjoy daily activities.  Fortunately, treatment with physical therapy can help you find relief and get back to doing what you love!

Say Hello to Tate Funston

Tate grew up in Collingwood and was an avid multi-sport athlete, with a particular passion for hockey and soccer. His experiences navigating sports injuries from a young age- and the support he received from physiotherapists- sparked an early interest in rehabilitation and inspired his pursuit of a career in physiotherapy.

Tate completed his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo, where he gained valuable experience working with varsity sports teams as a Strength and Conditioning intern. Through this role, he developed a strong interest in helping individuals recover from injury and return to peak performance, applying the same principles used to optimize performance in healthy athletes.

He went on to earn a Masters degree in Physiotherapy from Western University, graduating in 2023. Tate joined the Peak to Shore team shortly thereafter, bringing a passion for evidence-based care and a commitment to helping clients achieve their goals.

When not working with patients at Peak to Shore in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach, Tate can be found enjoying the beach, working out in the gym, playing recreational sports, and playing music with friends.

Understanding Your Hip Joints

Your hips are ball-and-socket joints, where your femur (thigh bone) fits into your pelvis (hip socket). A cushion of cartilage in your hips prevents friction as your hip bone moves within the socket. Pain can occur if this cartilage wears down or is damaged due to age, injury, or overuse.

There are several reasons why you may be experiencing hip pain:

Additional causes of hip pain include fractures, dislocations, and certain diseases. If you experience sudden or severe hip pain, especially after an injury, it is important to contact our office for evaluation as soon as possible.

How Physical Therapy Can Help

Physical therapy is a highly effective treatment for hip pain. Our PTs are movement experts who will conduct a thorough evaluation to identify the underlying causes of your pain. Your personalized treatment plan may include:

  • Pain Relief: Specialized techniques, such as manual therapy, joint mobilizations, and soft tissue techniques, can help improve blood flow, free up tension or restriction in movement, and reduce pain in the affected areas.
  • Mobility Work: Prescribed exercises to improve movement and range of motion in the hip joint.
  • Strengthening Exercises: Exercises to strengthen the muscles around the hip joint, providing support and stability for a successful recovery.

Personalized Hip Pain Relief

A retired teacher sought help at our clinic due to persistent hip pain that had gradually worsened over the past year. The pain was most noticeable when standing up from a seated position, during walks with her dog, and at night while trying to sleep. She had tried over-the-counter pain medication, heat therapy, and rest but found minimal relief.

During her evaluation, our physiotherapists observed limited range of motion in her hip and noted weakness in the surrounding muscles. After a comprehensive assessment, she was diagnosed with hip osteoarthritis, a common condition associated with aging and wear and tear on the joint.

Our PTs created a tailored treatment plan for her that focused on pain management, improving hip mobility, and strengthening the supporting muscles. Targeted manual therapy techniques were utilized to reduce pain and stiffness, while prescribed exercises aimed to increase her range of motion and improve overall hip function. We also provided her with education on proper body mechanics and strategies for managing daily activities.

After attending every physical therapy session and following exercise instructions in between, she experienced significant improvement in her hip pain and mobility. She was able to resume her daily walks with her dog, enjoy gardening without discomfort, and sleep soundly through the night.

Announcing Two New Services: Platelet-Rich Plasma and Hyaluronic Acid Injections

We’re excited to share two new treatment options now available at our Collingwood and Wasaga Beach locations: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and hyaluronic acid injections. Both services are safe and effective ways to reduce musculoskeletal pain while boosting long-term healing.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections: PRP injections use a small sample of your own blood to create a concentrated mix of platelets, which contain natural growth factors that can trigger cell reproduction and stimulate healing and support tissue repair. We inject this platelet-rich plasma directly into the injury site, where it stimulates your body’s healing response, reduces inflammation, and improves function. This can be especially helpful for:

  • Stubborn tendon injuries (like tennis elbow or Achilles tendonitis)
  • Arthritis-related joint pain
  • Muscle strains or ligament injuries

Hyaluronic Acid Injections: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your joints that helps with lubrication and shock absorption. One of the symptoms of osteoarthritis is a decline in your hyaluronic acid, which contributes to pain and stiffness. Injecting more of it into an affected joint (especially the knees) can:

  • Improve mobility and range of motion
  • Reduce stiffness and swelling
  • Support smoother, more comfortable movement

If joint pain or injury is limiting your daily life, these new treatment approaches could be exactly what you need! Contact Peak To Shore Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine today to learn if they’re right for you.

Prehab and Rehab for Hip Surgery Success

Did you know that physical therapy is an important part of both the preparation for and recovery from hip replacement surgery? Prehabilitation, or “prehab,” focuses on strengthening the muscles around the hip joint and improving mobility to set you up for a faster and smoother recovery.

Prehabilitation: Prehab exercises may include:

  • Targeted stretching and range-of-motion exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Gait training and balance activities

Patients may also learn how to use assistive devices like walkers or crutches, as well as practice post-surgery movements like getting in and out of bed or a chair.

Rehabilitation: Rehab begins almost immediately after surgery, with exercises becoming more challenging as the patient heals.

  • Early mobilization is key to prevent complications and promote healing
  • Prescribed Exercises
    • Manage pain
    • Help prevent blood clots
    • Regain mobility and strength

The duration and intensity of both prehab and rehab vary depending on individual factors such as age, overall health, and the specific surgical approach. However, both are integral components of a successful hip replacement journey by contributing to improved outcomes, reduced pain, and a faster return to normal activities.

Recipe of the Month: Creamy Roasted Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • One 4-pound sugar pie pumpkin
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 4 large or 6 medium garlic cloves, pressed or minced
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon cloves
  • Tiny dash of cayenne pepper (optional, if you like spice)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 cups (32 ounces) vegetable broth
  • ½ cup full fat coconut milk or heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
  • ¼ cup pepitas (green pumpkin seeds)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Carefully halve the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds (seeds can be roasted separately, if desired, but are not needed for this recipe).
  2. Cut each pumpkin half into quarters. Brush or rub 1 tablespoon of olive oil over the flesh, then place the quarters cut-side down on the baking sheet. Roast for 35 minutes or until the flesh is easily pierced with a fork. Allow to cool slightly.
  3. Heat the remaining 3 tablespoons olive oil in a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Once shimmering, add the onion, garlic, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is translucent, about 8 to 10 minutes. Meanwhile, peel the skin from the roasted pumpkin and discard.
  4. Add the pumpkin flesh, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cayenne pepper (if using), and freshly ground black pepper to the pot. Stir to break up the pumpkin slightly. Pour in the broth, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  5. While the soup simmers, toast pepitas in a medium skillet over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until fragrant, golden, and lightly popping. Avoid burning. Transfer to a bowl to cool.
  6. Once the soup is done simmering, stir in the coconut milk and maple syrup. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Use an immersion blender to purée the soup directly in the pot, or blend in batches using a stand blender (do not exceed the blender’s max fill line). Secure the lid and use a kitchen towel to cover the top, puréeing until smooth. Transfer puréed soup to a serving bowl and repeat with remaining soup.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed—add more coconut milk for creaminess or maple syrup for sweetness.
  8. Ladle into bowls, garnish with toasted pepitas, and serve. Allow leftovers to cool completely before refrigerating in an airtight container for up to 4 days. This soup also freezes well for up to 3 months.
