NEW 1-1 PHYSIO-LED PILATES

We are happy to announce a new service at Peak to Shore. Julia Roth is now offering 1-1 Physio-led ‘Functional Pilates’ sessions during her working hours. Ever wondered what Physio-led Pilates really is – or how it can benefit you? Julia explains just that below.
Pilates is a concept that was created by Joseph Pilates and was originally used for assisting in the rehabilitation of injured individuals during World War 1! It later became so successful that it continued to develop into a pathway to prevent injury and improve performance within the dance world. As we know it today, Pilates has continued to grow and develop into a type of exercise targeted at improving strength, endurance, mobility and control of functional movements we perform daily to reduce the risk of injury. The benefits of Pilates are endless (for both physical and mental health!). The overall aim is to develop deep postural ‘core’ muscles that support the spine during postural movements as treatment for acute and/or chronic spinal-related pain. It is common for individuals that have experienced back pain in the past to develop compensatory movement patterns and/or be fearful of movements that originally contributed to their back pain. Pilates is a method of movement that therefore helps to re-introduce ‘normal’ and more efficient movement patterns after such injuries or episodes of back pain to help restore the full available range of motion.
So what makes Physio-led Pilates different?
As a Level 2 APPi (Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute) trained instructor, Julia combines her wealth of physiotherapy knowledge with her own experiences with injury rehabilitation and her Strength and Conditioning background to thoroughly assess patient’s movement patterns and biomechanics. The APPi method is unique in its design as it is the only Pilates program in the world that was fully designed, taught and developed by Physiotherapists. Unlike many other Pilates classes and programs, Julia educates her clients on why each particular exercise is relevant for a particular person, specifically tailoring the program toward the patient’s rehab goals and needs. With consideration of each client’s previous and current injuries, she carefully selects specific exercises and modifications for each client in front of her. Only after a client understands and demonstrates body awareness and control of each Pilates movement do they progress along the exercise levels and pathway at a speed that is relevant to them in a controlled and safe environment. Once a stable ‘core’ has been created through both static and dynamic postures, progressions for each of the core Pilates exercises can be achieved through adding limbs, altering positions, and adding resistance. This allows Julia to cater to all different levels and provide an individualized one-to-one hands-on exercise experience. The result is more efficient and low impact movement aiding in power output that is transferable to a variety of sports and injury prevention in everyday life.
